Pioneering music producer Simon Begg, better known as Si Begg , is set to release his sixth studio album, Blueprints , on Berlin label Shitkatapult June 16th.
Dubbed a ‘visionary’ by The Who’s Pete Townsend and widely considered a producer’s producer, Beggs music combines elements of experimental, electronic, analogue, noise, breakbeat, ambient, drum and bass, but has released electronic music for more than two decades in many styles, different pseudonyms on several different record labels.
Backed over the course of his career by the likes of John Peel, Thom Yorke, Leftfield, The Glitch Mob, Bassnectar and Mouse On Mars, he has also carved a reputation as an award-winning composer for television and film. Since the release of his last LP, 2013’s Permission To Explode, Begg has written scores for four feature films as well as for Netflix Original series, Lovesick, and Battle Rap documentary, War of Words and worked on channels producing sound designs that include the BBC, Channel 4 and MTV
Si Begg’s first LP in four years, the 10 track project was inspired by the discovery of an old diagrammatic notebook that belonged to Begg’s grandfather, George, a former avant-garde engineer, which formed the concept for the Blueprints album following Beggs discovery of the notebook, a beautifully preserved leather-bound volume, with his grandfather’s annotates compiling the diary with meticulous diagrams of compressors and parallel air ducts, graphs recording comparative noise levels at different factories, statistical information detailing the thermal efficiency of power stations, alongside blueprints for futuristic machines yet to be built.
His discovery came just as Begg himself was reconnecting with his own back-to-basics studio machinery, the voltage-powered hardware, an obvious parallel that felt like synchronicity, which prompted the British artist to begin producing tracks using analogue synthesizers that were recorded live in one take, augmented by circuit bend effects units and the electromagnetic field noise. In his characteristically uncompromising way, the experimentation with cogs and gears and excess noise, enthusiastically promoted Begg to champion these elements of idiosyncratic sounds, placing them centre stage, that gives recognition to his machines and synthesizers, while simultaneously producing works of art in their own right. Like his grandfather’s designs, they had an aesthetic beauty all of their own.
The result is Blueprints a hymn to the voltage-controlled oscillator, while also combining Beggs passion for contemporary scores that’s paired with his love of electronic music, evoking beauty and romance of great engineering. The cutting edge impact of raw electrical waves pulsating through the heart of the 10 track album concludes as a fate calling work hosting distinctive sounds exploring Blueprints and machines – an ode to his Grandfather’s own futuristic visions is finally to be released by the British producer and sound designer Si Begg.
